Abstract rendering of a search result with an AI-generated overview panel

Google AI Overviews is the AI-generated summary that sits above the traditional results for many queries. Because it sits on the world's largest search engine, it is the answer surface with the most reach — and an important target for any agency doing AEO.

How the surface behaves

An AI Overview synthesizes an answer and links to supporting pages. It tends to draw on content that is already performing in traditional search and that is structured for direct extraction. This makes AI Overviews the surface where SEO and AEO overlap most: strong conventional search performance is a prerequisite, and answer-first structure is the differentiator.

  1. Earn conventional relevance — AI Overviews mostly draw from pages already ranking.
  2. Lead with the answer — content that directly resolves the query is easier to summarize.
  3. Structure for navigation — clear headings and sections help the model find the relevant passage.
  4. Mark it up — schema reinforces what each section claims.

Measuring presence

Track which client queries trigger an AI Overview, whether the client is among the linked sources, and how that changes over time. Search Console performance data plus manual prompt checks together give a workable picture.

ExperimentExperiment: restructuring a ranking page

Before

A page ranked on page one but was not pulled into the AI Overview for its query — its answer was buried mid-article.

After

Moving a direct, 50-word answer to the top of the page led to it being referenced in the Overview.

Takeaway

The page already had the authority. It lacked the extractable answer up front. Structure was the whole gap.
