Split conceptual image contrasting a ranked link list with an AI answer

AEO and SEO are often pitched as rivals. They are not. AEO is what SEO becomes when the destination shifts from a ranked link to a synthesized answer. Most of the technical foundation carries over; the optimization target changes.

What carries over

  • Crawlability and site health — an engine still has to access and parse your pages.
  • Quality content — substantive, accurate, well-researched material wins in both.
  • Structured data — schema matters for both, and arguably more for AEO.
  • Authority signals — credibility built over time helps in both worlds.

What changes

  • The unit of visibility — a ranked position becomes a citation inside an answer.
  • Content order — building to a point works for engagement but loses citations; answer-first wins.
  • Success metric — clicks and rankings become citation share and AI-referred sessions.
  • Freshness weighting — answer engines, especially Perplexity, penalize stale pages harder.

What is genuinely new

Two things have no real SEO equivalent. First, entity reasoning: answer engines need to recognize your brand as a coherent entity, which makes canonical naming and schema load-bearing. Second, the source-mix effect: each engine has its own trusted platforms — Reddit and Wikipedia for ChatGPT, Reddit and LinkedIn and G2 for Perplexity — and optimizing for them is a new off-page discipline.

ExperimentExperiment: same page, two scoreboards

Before

A page ranked respectably in Google but was never cited by Perplexity — it built slowly to its point.

After

An answer-first rewrite kept the Google ranking and added Perplexity citations.

Takeaway

AEO and SEO are not a trade-off. A well-built page can win both scoreboards at once.

How an agency should position the two

Sell AEO as an extension, not a replacement. The client keeps their SEO budget; AEO is the new line that protects that investment as search behaviour migrates into answer engines.
